Housing

Above all else, a house needs to be a home, a place that you can live and grow. We need, beyond all else, somewhere that is safe and secure, so that we can be a part of our local communities freely. Whether we look towards building Tiny House communities, or renovating brownfield sites, we can and we will ensure that everyone has a place they can call a home.
- When a civilised country approaches the issue of homelessness, when at the same time that country has masses of empty houses, they see a fairly logical path to fix two distinct problems with the same solution. In the UK, meanwhile... we have instead seen that problem, and decided the fix is to allow people to install spikes on their empty properties so that the homeless aren't allowed even to shelter from the cold in a doorway overnight. We will restrict the use of hostile architecture as a matter of decency, and we will empower councils to make use of Empty Property Premiums, ensuring that we avoid this terrible 'irony' of a situation.
- Of course, even then you can still have empty homes and people freezing on the street. However, there is a solution that still stands! Whilst the rights of squatters is consistently under threat from those who take issue at the idea of people seeking warmth and shelter, we can reverse these attacks together. First, we will require all land to be registered, which helps squatters and everyone else alike. We will then follow this by substantially lowering the occupancy time required, meaning that unused property can be transferred to a more suitable owner more efficiently.
- If you can't be certain that you will be allowed to continue living where you are by the same time next week, then it would be madness to expect your living conditions to be stress free - and yet for those renting, that's the stark reality faced day after day, thanks to the continued existence of 'No Fault' evictions. A landlord should not have the power to upend someone's life purely because they feel like it, and as such we will repeal Section 21 'No Fault' Evictions.
- Social housing is the bedrock of our society - selling it off is like cutting off our legs, all in the name of an ideology that home ownership is the be-all and end-all. We will repeal the 'Right to Buy' Act', and in order to tackle the recent lack of any social housing being constructed, we will begin building new social housing, so that we all have a place to live.
