Building Up, not Out

While it is important that land is freed up for further development, it is crucial that cities move towards a vertical model of building instead of a horizontal model, as a more compact city makes it easier to move around. This is why the People's Movement supports vertical building in cities and the encouragement of new high-rise developments on urban brownfield sites.

Building For The Planet

It is a necessity that new housing builds are sustainable and eco-friendly. The People's Movement will ensure that all new housing developments have eco-friendly design elements such as rainwater collection facilities or solar panels - as was previously required, before basic environmental sensibility was destroyed by Liberals and Conservatives.

Defending Renters

AirBNB, and companies like it, are profiting off of evicting tenants and turning properties into short-term lets for tourists and not for residents, decreasing the amount of available housing and increasing property prices. The People's Movement supports restrictions on AirBNBs and strong protection for tenants against evictions.

Ending a scourge of Empty Houses

To further alleviate the housing crisis in areas unsuitable for development, it is crucial that regional bans on second home purchases are instituted to protect local housing and stop the epidemic of empty second houses that has swept across many tourist-friendly areas. The People's Movement will also institute a levy on all second home purchases for this reason.

Supporting Housing Co-Operatives

The right to a home of decent quality is paramount, and best met when communities have a greater say in housing - as well as the means to enact needed changes. The People's Movement will establish a Universal Housing Fund with the aim of renovating homes and giving credit to establish housing co-operatives.h

Freeing Up Land

The so-called "Green Belt" is a desolate monocultural wasteland which does nothing but prevent affordable and low-cost housing from being built - indeed, 'Green Belt' land is often far less ecologically diverse than regular land that hasn't been turned over to farming. The People's Movement will abolish the Green Belt, freeing up over 1.5 million hectares of land.
