Fairer Elections
The current Additional Member System of electing MPs is flawed. It maintains the disproportionate element of FPTP while allowing parties to "game the system" by endorsing decoy list parties in regions they perform well in. The People's Movement will support the Scandinavian system, which most closely matches votes to seats while maintaining local representation.
Removing Barriers To Voting
Many countries worldwide, including Canada, allow new voters to register to vote at their polling place on the day of election. The People's Movement believes that the UK should implement on-the-day registration, so that voters aren't disenfranchised simply by not registering early enough.
Votes for All
The People's Movement supports restoring universal prisoner voting, extending the franchise to people serving longer sentences. It is a firm belief of ours that people should not be disenfranchised for any reason, and prisoners serving long sentences should have just as much of an opportunity to participate in democracy as anyone else.
... and we mean All!
We believe that people who live in the UK should be able to vote on decisions that affect them. The People's Movement supports ensuring that all UK residents, whether or not they are a citizen of the UK or Ireland, are able to vote in general elections as they already are able to in local elections.
Levelling the Playing Field
Following on from our legislative work in the previous term, the People's Movement will support the legalisation of all-BAME shortlists for general election candidate selections. We will also ensure AWS are protected. These tools have allowed for voices that wouldn't otherwise be represented to have a fair say in parliament.
Protecting the Franchise
It would be a democratic outrage if any future Government were to take measures to strip the franchise from anyone who previously had it. The People's Movement will ensure that there are no moves to abolish Votes at 16 in any Government we participate in.
